Description

Steffen Welsch Architects is an award-winning Melbourne practice established in 2001, working across residential, multi-residential, education, aged care and community projects.
Our services include pre-purchase inspections, site review, due diligence and early feasibility. We advise clients what a site and project can realistically support, before making large commitments. From there, we provide design, town planning, documentation and contract administration, carrying projects through to construction.
Design and construction are a collaborative effort – an approach that we foster within our project teams to assure we use our collective knowledge, experience and ideas. This method has been very successful and continues to be applied at key milestones of each project.
For property owners, developers and project teams, this means advice that is grounded not only in design, but also in approvals, buildability, coordination and delivery. We aim for our projects to stack up over time: how they get approved, how they are documented, how they are built, and how they perform in use. Sustainability and
Founder Steffen Welsch graduated from Bauhaus University in Germany and has worked in Australia since 1993. Alongside practice, he has combined professional work with broader community engagement, including founding a primary school, and setting up a not-for-profit organisation supporting built environment professionals to reduce carbon emissions in construction.
Our responsibilities to our environment and future generations are embedded into the delivery of all projects. We apply passive solar design principles for comfort and low energy use, select materials to reduce environmental impacts in sourcing, making and construction, and detail to minimise maintenance where possible.
Over the last two decades we focussed on continuously improving sustainable designs and are now introducing post construction evaluation, life cycle assessment and a biodiversity plan into our projects to assure a long-term positive contribution to our environment.
