Headaches are one of the most frequent presenting symptoms patients will come to clinic for to get treatment. There are many different causes. From a Chinese Medical perspective they can be caused form external pathogenic invasions of wind, cold, heat and dampness. These pathogens can obstruct the meridians causing blockages as most of the meridians travel to the head. They can also be internal causes from deep stagnation in the body, excesses and deficiencies all of which are determined through Chinese medical diagnosis.
There are basic acupressure points that can help generally manage headaches. You can try these at home to help assist and relieve symptoms.
LI 4 Hegu is the command point of the head and generally relieves headaches when massaged.
Lv 3 Taichong can relieve headaches when related to stress and particularly for headaches on the highest point on the head. Located between the 1st and 2nd toes.
GB-31 Fengshi massage generally for pain management for headaches. Located at arm’s length on the midpoint of the thigh.
St43 Xiangu Great point to massage for headaches across the forehead and also for nausea and upset stomachs in conjunction with headache. The point is located between 2nd and 3rd toes.
A basic herbal combination I have found very effective is green tea combined with Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Ligustici). It is a basic variation of the traditional formula, however very effective and brings immediate relief. Chuan Xiong is available at any leading asian grocer or you can purchase from your Chinese Herbal practitioner.
It is important to use a good grade of green tea combined with the fresh root of the herbs. Use 1 teaspoon of green tea and 3 grams of Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Ligustici). Grind into powder and put into teabag. Make as you would a normal cup of tea.
If headaches still persist it is important to have a consultation with a qualified practitioner to address the root cause of the headaches.
